The Tren Llanquihue to Puerto Montt is a four-stop regional service around the Llanquihue basin. It runs 27.4 km from Llanquihue through Puerto Varas and Alerce to La Paloma on the upper side of Puerto Montt.
The Puerto Montt terminal is La Paloma, about two kilometers from the city center. It is not the former waterfront station. EFE introduced feeder buses at La Paloma and Alerce, but the current route and connection time should be checked before treating the train as a direct downtown link.
The current passenger service opened in April 2025 after an eighteen-year absence. EFE rehabilitated track, restored La Paloma station, and built a new stop at Alerce to serve the fast-growing residential area between Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt.
The end-to-end trip takes about 37 minutes. The base service runs on weekdays. EFE has added Saturday trains for summer periods, but that seasonal expansion should not be assumed on an ordinary weekend.
Payment is electronic through validators aboard the train. The official service page publishes the current first and last trains, fares, and accepted payment methods.
The regional railcar has climate control, wide doors, passenger information, and space for passengers with reduced mobility. It is a short commuter setup without reserved seats or a long-distance luggage service.
The trains and rebuilt platforms provide accessible boarding. Puerto Varas and Llanquihue use historic railway sites, while Alerce is a modern halt. La Paloma has more space than a downtown terminal but requires an onward street connection for most central Puerto Montt destinations.
