Mike’s notes
The Tren Solar de la Quebrada is a 42 km tourist railway between Volcán and Tilcara. It stops at Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Posta de Hornillos, and Maimará inside the UNESCO-listed Quebrada de Humahuaca. The train is sold as a guided excursion rather than ordinary local transportation.
The route uses part of the former Belgrano Line C, where passenger trains had been absent for three decades. Jujuy rebuilt the track and stations, held an inaugural run in December 2023, and began public service on June 18, 2024. Posta de Hornillos became the sixth boarding point on May 2, 2025.
CRRC Tangshan supplied two two-car electric multiple units with 600 kWh battery systems. Each train has 70 seats, panoramic windows, charging points, and an official range of 100 to 120 kilometers. The units recharge at stations instead of drawing power from overhead wires.
Tickets are sold through the official website, WhatsApp, and station offices. The full-route 360 product uses all six stations, while the 180 products cover selected sections from Purmamarca. Cash, cards, QR, and payment links are accepted. Only a small bag up to 3 kilograms and one 500 ml bottle of water may be brought aboard.
Reduced-mobility accommodations must be declared when booking. Each service has one free place for a passenger with an Argentine disability certificate, subject to availability, and the operator requires at least 30 days' notice for that reservation.
