Portugal, Europe
Lisbon has the best cluster of day trips of any Iberian capital. A UNESCO palace town, the Atlantic coast, a walled medieval village, and an Alentejo wine city are all inside about 90 minutes, most by direct train.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Sintra | About 40 min by train from Rossio station | A hillside of romantic palaces and estates, including Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira. The main day trip. Go early and book Pena online. |
| Cascais | About 40 min by train from Cais do Sodré | A breezy coastal resort town at the end of the line, with beaches, a walkable center, and the Boca do Inferno sea cliff nearby. |
| Óbidos | About 1 hr by bus from Campo Grande | A whitewashed medieval village inside intact castle walls, known for its bookshops and the ginja cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup. |
| Setúbal and Arrábida | About 1 hr by train or ferry and bus | The Arrábida natural park, green hills dropping to clear-water beaches, plus dolphin-watching in the Sado estuary and fried cuttlefish in Setúbal. |
| Évora | About 1.5 hr by train | A UNESCO-listed Alentejo town with a Roman temple, a cathedral, and the macabre Chapel of Bones, set in Portugal's main wine region. |
