Morocco, Africa
Marrakech sits at the foot of the High Atlas and three hours from the Atlantic, so the day trips run from mountain valleys to a walled port town. All of them are long days, so book a driver or a tour rather than chasing public transport.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| The High Atlas and Imlil | About 1.5 hr by road to Imlil | The mountain village at the trailhead for Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. A day trip gets you a valley walk, a Berber lunch, and the air change. Trekkers heading for the summit stay overnight. |
| Essaouira | About 2.5 to 3 hr by road or Supratours bus | The walled Atlantic port, a windswept blue-and-white town of ramparts, a working fishing harbor, and a calmer pace than Marrakech. Long as a day trip, better as an overnight. |
| The Ourika Valley | About 1 to 1.5 hr by road | The closest mountain escape, a green river valley in the foothills with waterfalls, Berber villages, and roadside cafes. The easy half-day out of the heat. |
| Ouzoud Falls | About 2.5 to 3 hr by road | The tallest waterfall in Morocco, a multi-tier drop with pools, walking paths, and resident Barbary macaques. A full day given the drive. |
