Visited 2015Belvedere began as Prince Eugene of Savoy’s summer estate. The Lower Belvedere was his residence, while the Upper Belvedere was the grand reception building. Both were finished as one complex by 1723, with the formal garden climbing the slope between them.
The Upper Belvedere is now the main museum stop and holds the Klimt collection, including The Kiss. The exterior still explains the original layout even without a museum ticket. Start at the Lower Belvedere for the uphill sequence the estate was designed around, or enter by the Upper Belvedere for the familiar palace view and walk down through the gardens. Allow extra time only if you are going inside.
