Visited 2015

The garden is the route between the two Belvedere palaces, not a separate park somewhere beside them. It rises in three broad levels from the Lower Belvedere to the Upper Belvedere, using fountains, clipped hedges, sphinxes, and statues to keep the palace centered in view.

Prince Eugene’s full estate was completed in 1723, and this axis is what joins its residential and ceremonial halves. Walking uphill gives the intended sequence and saves the Upper Belvedere for the finish. Walking downhill is easier and keeps central Vienna in the distance. Entry to the main garden is free, so it also works as an exterior visit when the museum is not part of the day.
