Visited 2021The walls run about two kilometers in a complete loop around the old town, up to 25 meters high, and you walk them one way along the top. From up there the Old City of Dubrovnik reads as a single field of terracotta roofs against the Adriatic, with Fort Lovrijenac out on its rock to the west. The full circuit takes a couple of hours with photo stops.
It is not cheap, around €35 to €40 for an adult, and there is no shade. Wear a hat and sunscreen and carry water, because the walk is long and fully exposed. A few cafes built into the walls sell cold drinks and have a little shade, but they get crowded. The best time is early, right when the gates open. The worst is the afternoon sun on a day when six cruise ships are in port and the whole circuit moves at a shuffle.
The main entrance is by the Pile Gate at the top of the Stradun, up a steep staircase, with smaller entrances at Ploče and St. John's Fort. Buy at the gate or online, and the ticket also covers Fort Lovrijenac across the harbor. Gates open around 8 a.m. in summer.
