Mike's review
Visited 2021Fort Lovrijenac stands on a 37-meter rock just west of the Pile Gate, outside the city walls and facing them across a small bay. About 200 steps get you to the top. The fortress guarded Dubrovnik from the western approach by land and sea, and from up there you look straight back at the old town and its walls.
Over the gate is the old republic's motto: Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro, freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world. The building itself backs it up. The seaward walls run up to twelve meters thick, while the walls facing the city are only about sixty centimeters. That was deliberate. The fort kept its own commander, and if he ever turned on the republic, the city's own cannons could break straight through the thin side.
Game of Thrones fans will know it as the Red Keep in King's Landing, and it doubles as an open-air stage for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. A city walls ticket includes entry, so most people pair the two.
