About Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, historically also known as Ragusa, is a city in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, by the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, a seaport and the centre of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. In 2021, its total population was 41,562. Recognizing its outstanding medieval architecture and fortifications, UNESCO inscribed the Old City of Dubrovnik as a World Heritage Site in 1979.

Dubrovnik was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa for centuries before it became a filming location or cruise stop. The Old Town is compact, but I would stay at least two nights. That gives you an early morning and an evening after many day visitors have left.

    Getting in from the airport

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is about 20 km southeast of the Old Town. The Platanus shuttle is inexpensive and follows arriving flights. A car is more convenient when the hotel is not near Ploče Gate or the main bus station.

Mode Time Cost What to know
Platanus airport shuttle About 30 to 45 min €10 one way in 2026 Stops at Ploče Gate and the main bus station in Gruž. Buy online or at the airport counter
Uber / Bolt About 25 to 40 min Varies by demand Door-to-door. Check whether the accommodation can be reached by car because vehicles do not enter the Old Town
Official airport taxi About 25 to 40 min Confirm at the rank Useful with several people or a large amount of luggage

    Festivals and big annual events

Cruise schedules affect the Old Town on more days than the festival calendar. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is the main seasonal event to plan around.

    Event When What it changes
Dubrovnik Summer Festival July 10 to August 25 Open-air theater, music, and dance in the Old Town. Hotels in Old Town and Lapad rise
Feast of St Blaise February 3 Local patron-saint procession through the Old Town, in the cheap low-season window
Cruise-heavy days April to October Not a festival, but it defines the visit. Walk the walls before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
Carnival Before Lent Low-season costumes on the Stradun, smaller than the coastal headliners
Dubrovnik Winter Festival December to early January Lights and chalets on Stradun, with far fewer cruise visitors

    Where to stay

The Old Town has no vehicle access and many streets are steep or reached by stairs. Confirm the exact route from the nearest gate before booking a room with heavy luggage.

Area or property What to know
Old Town Best for walking to the historic sites. Rooms can be noisy, and every bag must be carried from a gate
Pile or Ploče Immediately outside the western and eastern gates. Easier for taxis while remaining close to the old town
Gruž Harbor and main bus station area. Less atmospheric, but practical for ferries, buses, and lower room prices
Boutique Hotel Porto Modern hotel between Gruž and the Old Town. Easier for luggage and rideshare than a room inside the walls
Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera Hotel Full resort in Srebreno, outside Dubrovnik. Better for pools and the beach than for repeatedly walking into the Old Town
Modern exterior balconies at Boutique Hotel Porto in Dubrovnik
Boutique Hotel Porto, a modern hotel between Gruž and Dubrovnik's Old Town.

    What to see

Old City Dubrovnik is the parent site for the walls, Stradun, churches, palaces, gates, and residential lanes. The named monuments matter, but much of the visit is simply walking the limestone streets after the largest tour groups leave.

Quiet limestone lane and steps inside Dubrovnik Old Town
A residential lane and stone steps inside Dubrovnik's Old Town.

The Dubrovnik city walls form a roughly 2 km circuit above the Old Town. Allow about two hours. I would enter when the walls open or during the final two hours before closing, after checking that day's hours.

The high-season adult wall ticket is €40 in 2026. The one-day Dubrovnik Pass includes the walls, several museums, and city buses. Compare the current prices before buying a wall-only ticket.

The Old Town and Adriatic from the Dubrovnik city walls.

AKVARIJ Dubrovnik Aquarium is a small aquarium in the stone rooms of Fort St. John. I found it inexpensive by Dubrovnik standards and liked the setting as much as the exhibits.

    Where to eat

Dubrovnik menus lean toward Dalmatian food: black risotto, grilled fish, pršut, Pošip, and Plavac Mali. Old Town restaurants are expensive even by Croatian coastal standards. These are the places where I ate.

The stone arcade outside Gradska Kavana Arsenal beside the Old Port.
    Spot Why Notes
Gradska Kavana Arsenal A full dinner by the Old Port I have consistently eaten well here. I order the truffle pasta and prefer the tables beneath the harbor-side arcade
Barba A less expensive lunch Casual fried seafood and portions large enough to share
Mediteraneo Sushi & Seafood A quick meal without a reservation I did not wait, but the salmon tartare was not fresh on my visit. I would use it only as a backup
Bistro cafe bar G Casual sit-down Pinned
    Bistro Paradiso Italian Pinned
Buža Bar The famous cliff-edge bar Pinned

    Lucin Kantun Dubrovnik Konoba Pinned
Stone cut-through in the Dubrovnik city walls framing the Adriatic at Buza Bar

I would skip Azur. The sliders were acceptable but overpriced, the tacos were stale and cold, and the bottle necks were visibly dirty. I rated it 3/5.

    Quick answers

How much time do I need in Dubrovnik?
Two full days cover the city walls, Cathedral, Sponza Palace, Rector's Palace, and an evening at Buža Bar. A third day is enough for Lokrum or the Elaphiti Islands. Kotor and Mostar are longer trips with border crossings, so I would not combine either with a rushed Old Town day.
How do I get from Dubrovnik Airport to the Old Town?
The Platanus airport shuttle costs €10 one way in 2026 and runs from DBV to Ploče Gate and the main bus station in Gruž. Departures from the airport are tied to arriving flights. Uber, Bolt, and official taxis are better for hotels that are not near either shuttle stop. Libertas Line 38 is not a useful airport alternative because it runs only a few regional trips.
When should I walk the Dubrovnik city walls?
Enter at opening time or during the final two hours before the posted closing time. Midday brings more cruise groups and much stronger heat. Walking all 2 km takes around two hours. The high-season adult ticket is €40 in 2026. Compare it with the one-day Dubrovnik Pass, which includes the walls and other city museums.
Does Dubrovnik stand on its own outside Game of Thrones tourism?
Yes. Dubrovnik was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa and its walls, palaces, churches, and archives long predate the television series. Game of Thrones tours focus on locations such as Lovrijenac Fortress and the Jesuit Stairs, which can also be visited independently.
