About

Fremantle's West End preserves the street grid of the original 1829 town center and one of Australia's most intact port-business districts. High Street forms the main east-west line, with side streets running toward the harbor and the former shoreline. Most of the visible warehouses, hotels, banks, and commercial facades date from the gold-rush building boom between about 1890 and 1910. The district received state heritage registration in 2017. It is still a working part of Fremantle, with university buildings, shops, bars, and offices occupying the old structures. Walking west along High Street leads directly to the Round House, Arthur Head, and Bathers Beach.
