About
The tunnel cuts directly through the limestone beneath the Round House, linking High Street with Bathers Beach. The Fremantle Whaling Company proposed it in 1837 so goods could move between its jetty and town without climbing Arthur Head. Prisoners from the gaol did much of the digging with hand tools. It is now the quickest route between the West End and Bathers Beach, but the dark, narrow passage also makes the area's industrial history feel unusually physical.
