The Thompson Main House is in the right spot in the right place, but has a far way to go for a full 5 stars. I waffled a bit between 3/4 but ultimately it’s a very nice property, and some of my complaints with the hard product are simply something the hotel can’t do anything about.

I’ll start with the bad so if you’re skimming while deciding where to stay you don’t have to read several paragraphs. Bathrooms are glass so if you wake up in the middle of the night you’re either going in the dark or waking up other occupants. Rooms do not have a desk, don’t kid yourself it’ll be easy to work here even with the “work from Hyatt” package.

If you envisioned watching the World Cup here in your room, think again. They advertised that they would have it on upstairs but don’t have the tv package to have it on the bar meaning I had to scramble at 5am. This is a huge oversight, when pressed I was told “that package costs money” never mind this is not a cheap property nor the fact most bars in Latam have it on and are definitely not as fancy. If your room package includes a cabana/bed/etc at the rooftop club, expect to repeat yourself multiple times for a reservation. Mine mysteriously was never made never mind speaking with the front desk 3x and concierge 2x, oh yea and when I went day off and made the reservation upon return 5 minutes after confirmation there were people in my space. Now I’m the bad guy for asking to have them removed when staff should’ve been able to mark it off. I know this isn’t a $300+ a night property, but it’s playa which has a lower average cost so I’m disappointed.

The good: the hotel is beautiful. Rooms are nicely laid out and tasteful. This is a hotel in a vacation spot so If that’s why you’re here you’ll have what you need and are in an amazing location.

Be warned, it stays loud till 3am. Light sleepers should choose to stay elsewhere.

From the source

A beautiful, well-located Playa del Carmen hotel with tasteful rooms and vacation energy, but loud nights, glass bathrooms, no desk, and rooftop-club coordination issues made it imperfect.
