Memorial for Deserters, Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany
Mike's review
The Dammtor memorial is for deserters and other victims of Nazi military justice. It was dedicated in 2015 at Stephansplatz and Dammtor, beside the older 76th Regiment monument from 1936 and Alfred Hrdlicka's counter-memorial from the 1980s.
The triangular concrete form sits directly beside those older monuments. It changes the site from a war-memorial grouping into a place that also names people punished by Nazi military courts, including deserters whose recognition came very late.
