Hamburg Rathaus was built from 1886 to 1897 after the previous city hall was lost in the Great Fire of 1842. It still houses the parliament, senate, and mayor. The Neo-Renaissance exterior uses palace scale for municipal government, not for a royal residence.
The building has 647 rooms, a 112-meter tower, a courtyard, and direct links to the Chamber of Commerce and the Stock Exchange. Hamburg built a city hall that joins government, commerce, and ceremony in one block.
