St. Petri Church, Hamburg

St. Petri is an old parish site inside a 19th-century reconstruction. A church stood here by the early Middle Ages, and the site was first documented as a market church in 1195. The medieval Gothic basilica was badly damaged in the Great Fire of 1842.

The continuity of the site is the important part: market church, city church, fire scar, rebuilding. Look for the older pieces that survived, especially the bronze lion-head door handles from the 14th century.
