St. Nikolai is a church ruin and World War II memorial. The present meaning comes from the 19th-century Gothic Revival church and its destruction during Operation Gomorrah in 1943. The tower survived, the nave did not, and the ruin was left legible instead of being fully rebuilt.
The tower had also served as an orientation point for Allied bombers, which gives the architecture a darker role. Go inside for the crypt exhibition. If the lift is open, the view helps connect the memorial with the rebuilt city around it.
