About
Montjuïc Castle is an 18th-century fortress on the summit above Barcelona’s port. Its present layout comes from Juan Martín Cermeño’s 1751 redesign, built between 1753 and 1779 around four bastions, dry moats, and an irregular plan adapted to the hill. The site later served as Barcelona’s main military prison and became associated with political repression, including the execution of Catalan president Lluís Companys in 1940. The castle returned to the city in 2007. Today the ramparts and outer circuit give wide views over the port and the city.
