Visited 2021It's an obelisk in public. I gave it five stars because it's interesting to come across, not because I would plan a vacation around it.

The red-granite obelisk in Piazza Montecitorio was made for Pharaoh Psamtik II in Heliopolis during the sixth century BCE. Augustus brought it to Rome in 10 BCE and used it as the gnomon of a large solar instrument in the Campus Martius.
The obelisk fell and was gradually buried. It was recovered in broken sections in the eighteenth century and erected in its present location in 1792. Restored pavement markings again show its relationship to the sun's shadow. The monument stands in a public square in front of Italy's Chamber of Deputies.
