Visited 2025This is one of my favorite sections of El Retiro. Cecilio Rodríguez designed the garden in 1915, taking cues from rose gardens elsewhere in Europe. The beds now hold more than 4,000 roses inside an oval enclosure of clipped hedges and pergolas.
The display peaks in May and June, when the roses are in bloom. Outside that window it is still a compact formal garden, but the flowers are the reason to make a detour. Entry is free and the garden keeps shorter opening hours than the surrounding park.
