This UNESCO site is not one monument. It joins the tree-lined Paseo del Prado with El Retiro and the museums, gardens, and scientific institutions built around them. The paseo began as an urban avenue in the sixteenth century. El Retiro preserves part of the seventeenth-century palace grounds created for Philip IV.
A practical route starts around Cibeles or the Prado Museum, follows the paseo south, then enters El Retiro through one of its western gates. Inside the park, the Great Pond, rose garden, and Palacio de Cristal show different stages of the former royal estate. Each museum and enclosed attraction keeps its own hours, while the streets and most of the park can be walked without a ticket.
