The Great Pond has been used for boating since it formed part of Philip IV’s Buen Retiro palace grounds in the seventeenth century. Court entertainments once included royal boat trips, theater, and staged naval spectacles on the water. Public boating began in the nineteenth century, and the current dock occupies the north side of the pond.
This is the place to rent a rowing boat, not a separate historic building to tour. Rental hours and the last ticket time change with sunset and the season. Check the municipal schedule before going if the boat ride is the reason for the visit.

Ticket office closing time varies seasonally, roughly between 17:15 and 20:30 in 2026; the center is fully closed on Dec 24, 25, and 31 and Jan 1.
