The Mob Kangaroos on the Terrace

Perth, Australia

About

The Mob places a group of oversized bronze kangaroos along the north edge of Stirling Gardens on St Georges Terrace. Joan Walsh-Smith and Charles Smith arranged the animals in motion, as if they had been startled from the river and were crossing the modern street. The contrast with traffic and office buildings is part of the work.

The City of Perth installed the sculptures in 1997 during a broader program of streetscape improvements. Each kangaroo weighs roughly 850 to 1,000 kilograms. The work sits outdoors with no gate or admission charge, close to Council House, Government House and the paths through Stirling Gardens.
