Trajan's Column stands beside the remains of Trajan's Forum. It was erected in 113 CE and rises almost 40 meters including its base. A carved band wraps around the shaft 23 times, using roughly 200 meters of relief to depict Trajan's campaigns in Dacia.
A spiral staircase runs through the column's interior. Trajan's ashes were placed in the base, and a statue of the emperor originally stood at the top. Pope Sixtus V replaced it with the present statue of St. Peter in 1587. The column is viewed free from the surrounding streets and archaeological walkways, though much of the relief is too high to inspect closely from ground level.
