U1 opened in 1902 as part of Berlin's first U-Bahn, and it still runs mostly on the original elevated viaduct, about 8 km of iron Hochbahn through Kreuzberg from Uhlandstrasse to Warschauer Strasse. Its eastern end crossed the Spree into what became East Berlin and was cut by the Wall for decades. It reopened in October 1995, after Santiago Calatrava rebuilt the Oberbaumbrucke that carries the tracks over the river.
Accessibility is uneven. The elevated stations were built as stairs, and the BVG has added elevators to most but not all of them, so check the specific stop if you are carrying a bag or using a wheelchair.
