U8 opened in 1927 and was extended over the decades into its north-south run from Wittenau to Hermannstrasse, reaching Gesundbrunnen in 1930, Wittenau in 1994, and Hermannstrasse in 1996. Its Cold War history is the notable part. The line ran under East Berlin as a West Berlin service, and from 1961 six East Berlin stations, Bernauer Strasse, Rosenthaler Platz, Weinmeisterstrasse, Alexanderplatz, Jannowitzbrucke, and Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, were sealed as ghost stations that trains passed through without stopping until they reopened by 1990.
The line runs through Gesundbrunnen, Rosenthaler Platz, Kottbusser Tor, and Neukolln, which makes it useful for food and nightlife. Most stations are step-free after the BVG's elevator retrofits, though not all.
