U5 opened in 1930 from Alexanderplatz east to Friedrichsfelde, then grew eastward through the GDR years, reaching Hoenow by 1989. Its turn came in 2020, when a western extension carried it from Alexanderplatz under Museum Island, Unter den Linden, and the Brandenburg Gate to Hauptbahnhof, absorbing the short U55 stub. The line now runs Hoenow to Hauptbahnhof as the city's central axis.
The 2020 stations are new-build and step-free with elevators. The older stations on the eastern arm are being fitted under Berlin's network-wide lift program, so access is complete at the center and partial toward Hoenow.
