The excursion runs from Estación Desamparados in central Lima to Huancayo across the central Andes. Occasional holiday excursion.
The Ferrocarril Central opened its first section in 1870, reached La Oroya in 1893, and arrived in Huancayo in 1908.
Riding the line
Buy a ticket for a specific excursion through Ferrocarril Central Andino. The train can sell out quickly. A reservation on a previous holiday train says nothing about the next departure.
Current vehicles and ride: A diesel locomotive hauls conventional coaches with reserved seating. The trip takes most of the day, with basic and tourist service classes announced for each departure. This is a long high-altitude railway journey rather than a fast connection.
Connections: Lima departures use Estación Desamparados beside the Government Palace, although the building usually functions as the Casa de la Literatura Peruana. Huancayo station is on Avenida Ferrocarril near the center. Confirm the operator’s return arrangement because excursion dates are paired.
Accessibility: Historic platforms and conventional coaches involve steps, uneven surfaces, and narrower doors. Ask the operator about boarding assistance before buying. The rapid climb above 4,000 meters also deserves attention from anyone sensitive to altitude.
Do not build a trip around this train until tickets for a specific date are on sale. Tacna to Arica and the Tren Macho are also absent from this operating catalog because both remain suspended during rehabilitation work.
