Mike’s notes
ÖBB is the main passenger railway in Austria and a practical way to cross into neighboring countries. The long-distance network is centered on Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, and Villach, with through trains continuing beyond Austria.
Railjet is the principal daytime product. Economy works for a normal trip. First adds more space and a quieter carriage. Business is a smaller premium section with seat service on many trains. A restaurant car or bistro is available on Railjet services, although the exact formation can change.
Book the train, then check the seat
Flexible tickets and discounted Sparschiene fares follow different rules. Sparschiene is tied to a named train and becomes harder to change or refund. A daytime Railjet ticket does not always include a seat reservation, so add one when traveling at a busy time or carrying enough luggage that standing would be miserable.
ÖBB provides Wi-Fi on Railjet trains and accessibility information for each departure. Wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets are limited, and some international trips use partner equipment. Request assistance and reserve the required space before travel.
The 2026 timetable changed southern journeys substantially. The Koralm Railway shortened the Graz to Klagenfurt section to about 41 minutes, while direct Vienna to Venice Railjets still run through Bruck an der Mur and Graz before using the new line toward Klagenfurt and Villach.
