Quick facts

Operator
The SRT Red Lines are State Railway of Thailand suburban rail services.
Payment
Treat Red Line ticketing as its own SRT suburban-rail purchase rather than BTS Rabbit or MRT EMV.
Bangkok has several good systems, but they do not all share one simple payment product.
Separate ticketing
Airport
The Dark Red Line is useful for Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi is the separate Airport Rail Link.

Mike’s notes

Bangkok's SRT Red Lines are useful to know because they are not BTS, not MRT, and not the Airport Rail Link. They are the suburban rail layer centered on Krung Thep Aphiwat.

For most visitors, the one practical reason to care is Don Mueang. If your flight is at DMK and your route lines up with the Dark Red Line, it can be a clean rail approach. For Suvarnabhumi, keep using the Airport Rail Link.

This is not the system I would use to explore Bangkok on a first trip. It is a useful airport/suburban tool when the map lines up.
