Netherlands, Europe
Amsterdam's day trips run on one of the densest rail networks in Europe. Working windmills, the spring bulb fields, and three historic Dutch cities are all inside about an hour.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Zaanse Schans | About 20 min by train to Zaandijk, then a short walk | A riverside set of working windmills, green wooden houses, and craft workshops. The easiest half-day from the city. |
| Keukenhof and the bulb fields | About 40 min by direct bus, spring only | The cut-flower park open only mid-March to mid-May, surrounded by the striped tulip fields of the Bollenstreek. Pre-book the timed ticket. |
| Haarlem | 15 to 20 min by train | A calmer historic city with a grand market square, the Grote Kerk, and the Frans Hals Museum. The easy antidote to Amsterdam's crowds. |
| Utrecht | About 30 min by train | Canals on two levels with wharf-side cafes, the Dom Tower, and a student-city energy. The Dutch city most visitors skip and should not. |
| Delft | About 1 hr by train | Vermeer's town, with two landmark churches, the Royal Delft blue-pottery works, and a canal-laced center between Rotterdam and The Hague. |
