Montenegro, Europe
Kotor sits at the deep end of the Bay of Kotor, with the rest of the Montenegrin Adriatic and the Lovćen mountain range all inside a single hired-car day. The bus station is a hassle, so a rental or a driver makes the day-trip set work.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks | About 20 min by car or local bus from Kotor | The Venetian baroque waterfront village 12 km up the bay, with the boat shuttle to the artificial-island church of Our Lady of the Rocks. Half-day, easy. |
| Lovćen National Park and the Njegoš Mausoleum | About 1 hr each way by car | The black mountain that gave Montenegro its name, with the 461-step climb to the Njegoš Mausoleum at 1,660 m and the wide view back over the bay. |
| Budva and the Adriatic coast | About 30 min by car or bus | The walled old town and the Sveti Stefan island view on the Budva coast. More tourist-heavy than Kotor but the beach side is here. |
| Cetinje | About 50 min each way by car | The historic Montenegrin royal capital, with the King Nikola Museum and several monasteries. Quieter than the coast, real cultural-history stop. |
| Skadar Lake | About 1 hr 15 each way | The largest lake in the Balkans, on the Albanian border, with the wine country around Virpazar and boat trips through the lily-pad inlets. |
