Croatia, Europe
Split is the launch point for Dalmatia. Two UNESCO old towns, a hilltop fortress, a waterfall park, and the island ferries all leave from the city, most of them inside about an hour.
| Where | Getting there | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Trogir | 50 to 60 min on local bus 37 from Split bus station | A small UNESCO-listed medieval town on its own island, dense with Venetian stonework. An easy half-day. |
| Krka National Park | About 90 min by bus or organized tour | A river park of travertine waterfalls and pools. Closer and easier than Plitvice, which is a 3-hour overnight from Split. |
| Klis Fortress | About 30 min on local bus 22 | A fortress strung along a rock saddle above the city, with a long siege history and a turn as Meereen in Game of Thrones. |
| Hvar | 1 hr by Krilo catamaran, 2 hrs by Jadrolinija ferry | The main island, with the strongest food scene of the nearby islands and a busy nightlife in Hvar Town. |
| Brač | 50 min car ferry to Supetar, then about 1 hr by bus to Bol | The island of Zlatni Rat, the shifting shingle spit that is the most photographed beach in Croatia. |
