Why visit
The two major car museums alone justify a visit, Mercedes-Benz traces 130+ years of automobile history, while Porsche presents its racing legacy in stark architectural style. Beyond cars, climb to the Birkenkopf rubble hill for skyline views, explore the bustling Markthalle for Swabian deli food, and wander the Schlossplatz palace square. The Wilhelma zoo-and-botanical-garden combo is one of Germany's best. Include Cannstatter Wasen, Germany's second-largest beer festival after Oktoberfest, in late September. Try Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli), Spätzle, and a glass of local Trollinger wine.
When to avoid
Stuttgart 21, the long-running, controversial main station rebuild, means construction zones, route changes, and the occasional protest around the central station. Hotel rates spike during car industry events and the September Wasen festival. The hilly geography is taxing on foot, use the Stadtbahn light rail and funiculars (Zacke and Standseilbahn). Air quality alerts (Feinstaubalarm) occasionally restrict driving in winter inversions.
