Berlin is the capital of Germany, as well as its largest city by both area and population. With 3.7 million inhabitants, it has the highest population within its city limits of any city in the European Union. The city is also one of the states of Germany, being the third-smallest state in the country by area. Berlin is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, bordering Brandenburg's capital Potsdam to the southwest. The urban area of Berlin has a population of over 4.6 million, making it the most populous in Germany. The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region has around 6.2 million inhabitants and is Germany's second-largest metropolitan region after the Rhine-Ruhr region, as well as the fifth-biggest metropolitan region by GDP in the European Union.

Berlin plays by its own rules: less polished than Paris, less rich than London, and carrying a rougher cultural energy the other two lost decades ago. It is huge, the transit is superb, and nobody does Turkish-German food better. Plan the major sights and outer neighborhoods as separate geographic blocks.
Berlin Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) sits about 25 km south-east of central Berlin. The FEX express train is the cleanest direct route to the center, with the regional rail as a slightly slower backup.

The Berlin U-Bahn is excellent, but the city is a full rail web: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, regional trains, buses. Use AB tickets inside Berlin and ABC for BER or Potsdam. If you buy a paper ticket, validate it before boarding.
For a first trip, remember U5 for the new central museum/Hauptbahnhof axis, U2 for the classic east-west visitor line, U8 for a useful but rougher nightlife/Neukolln corridor, and U7 only if the X7 airport-bus connection makes sense for your hotel.
The tram is the visible east-side layer: Alexanderplatz, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, and the northeast neighborhoods. Use it when the route is obvious above ground.
Berlin's calendar is broad, but only a few windows change hotel prices or street rhythm: Berlinale, Pride, the marathon, New Year's, and the Christmas markets.

Berlin is sprawling by European standards and the walks are long. The central spine runs from the Brandenburg Gate east through Unter den Linden to Alexanderplatz, which is the foot-and-tram day if you only have one.
Brandenburg Gate is the city's most-photographed landmark and the one to see on a first visit. The square in front fills for the major civic events (German Unity Day on October 3, the New Year's Eve fireworks show), and the gate is one of the centerpieces of the Festival of Lights in October.
If chocolate is part of the trip, GALERIA Berlin Alexanderplatz on the east end of the same axis has a chocolate and confectionary section that runs deeper than most dedicated candy stores.
Berlin food runs on three threads: the Turkish-German döner kebab that Berlin made into a cuisine (the city has the largest Turkish diaspora outside Turkey), the modern German microbreweries and beer gardens, and the imported restaurant scene that Berlin's open immigration history built. One to skip if you have other options: Café Lebensart am Brandenburger Tor. The location next to the gate is convenient, but the staff give off real I-do-not-want-to-be-here energy. Go in only if you really need a coffee in that exact spot.
