Berlin's tram network is the east-side surface layer that reminds you the city was split for decades. West Berlin built around U-Bahn and buses. East Berlin kept and expanded trams. That history is still visible in the map.
For visitors, the tram matters around Alexanderplatz, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, and the northeast neighborhoods. Use it for short visible movement, not as a replacement for the Berlin U-Bahn or S-Bahn.
Tickets are the same BVG/VBB logic as the rest of the city. Buy/validate correctly, because Berlin inspection culture applies above ground too.
