Fremantle Port

Fremantle Port remains a working harbor at the mouth of the Swan River. Engineer C. Y. O’Connor designed the Inner Harbour, where dredging and two protective moles created a sheltered basin that opened in 1897. The long wharves followed the shoreline instead of projecting into the water, leaving enough width for larger ships and later cargo operations.

Victoria Quay provides the public side of the port, with views of ships, sheds and the 1964 Port Administration Building at Cliff Street. The eastern quay and operating wharves are restricted. Public paths around Victoria Quay and the North and South moles give a clear look at the harbor without entering work areas.
