Hamburger Kunsthalle

Hamburger Kunsthalle grew in stages. The first purpose-built museum opened in 1869, financed largely through citizen donations and placed on the former Vincent bastion near the Alster. Later additions followed in the early 20th century and in 1997.

Notice the three-building history before going inside. The older museum, the early-20th-century addition, and the 1997 contemporary gallery show Hamburg adding to the same public art institution over time. The collection ranges from northern German medieval work to German Romanticism, modernism, and contemporary art.
