Visited 2026Mercado de San Telmo gets crowded, and the newer food stalls are aimed heavily at visitors. None of the food is bad, but much of it is priced for tourists. I still give the market five stars.

Mercado de San Telmo fills most of the block between Defensa, Carlos Calvo, Bolívar and Estados Unidos. Its long aisles still mix produce stalls, butchers and neighborhood shops with antiques, cafes and restaurant counters. The iron columns, semicircular arches, sheet-metal and glass roofs, and central dome remain visible above the newer food stalls. The covered building is separate from the Sunday antiques fair on nearby Plaza Dorrego.
Architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo designed the market, which opened in 1897 to supply food to a neighborhood enlarged by European immigration. The original core was expanded in 1900 toward Defensa and again in 1922 toward Estados Unidos. Argentina declared it a National Historic Monument in 2000. The market is open daily, but individual food and retail stalls can keep shorter hours.

- The market and the surrounding San Telmo blocks are busy, but that should not be treated as a guarantee for the whole walk south toward La Boca. Watch phones and bags in the market crowd. The city tourism office considers La Boca's visitor areas appropriate by day but advises against walking its streets at night.
