Obelisco de Buenos Aires

The Obelisco stands in Plaza de la República at the meeting of Avenida Corrientes and Avenida 9 de Julio. Architect Alberto Prebisch designed the hollow concrete monument for the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires' first Spanish foundation. It was built in about 60 days and inaugurated on May 23, 1936.

The site had previously held the church of San Nicolás de Bari, where the Argentine flag was first raised in Buenos Aires in 1812. The obelisk rises 67.5 meters, with an internal ladder leading to four small windows at the top, but the interior is not normally open to visitors. See it from the pedestrian areas around Plaza de la República, then use the connected 9 de Julio, Carlos Pellegrini, and Diagonal Norte Subte stations to leave the intersection without crossing every traffic lane at street level.
