About
Palazzo Montecitorio is the seat of Italy's Chamber of Deputies. Bernini began the original palace in 1653 for the Ludovisi family. Carlo Fontana later completed it as a papal courthouse. After Rome became the capital of Italy, the building was adapted for parliament. Ernesto Basile added the large brick-and-travertine wing facing Piazza del Parlamento and designed the present chamber, opened in 1918. Public visits are scheduled through the Chamber rather than offered as ordinary walk-in access.
