About
The Column of Marcus Aurelius has stood in the Campus Martius since the late second century. A spiral relief records the emperor's campaigns against Germanic and Sarmatian peoples, while an internal staircase climbs through the shaft. The original imperial statue was replaced by Saint Paul during a restoration ordered by Sixtus V in 1589. The column rises in Piazza Colonna and is visible at any time.
