About
Santa Maria in Via grew around a medieval well and a Marian image associated with a reported miracle in 1256. The present church was rebuilt from 1491 and completed through work by Francesco da Volterra, Giacomo della Porta and Carlo Rainaldi. The small Madonna del Pozzo chapel preserves the well beside the image. Cups are provided for visitors who want to drink the water.
