St. Sebald began around 1215 as a Late Romanesque pillared basilica with two choirs. The church changed substantially in the Gothic period, especially after 1309 when the aisles were widened and reshaped. It was badly damaged in World War II and reconstructed after the war.
Inside, focus on the shrine of St. Sebald by Peter Vischer the Elder and his sons, completed in the early 16th century. It combines columns, canopies, figures, and metalwork around the city's patron saint. It is church furniture that behaves almost like architecture.
