Visited 2021Zappeion Hall is a 19th-century neoclassical building between the National Garden and the Panathenaic Stadium. Theophil Hansen designed it, and construction ran from 1874 to 1888. Evangelis Zappas funded the idea as part of the modern revival of Greek culture and athletics.
The building belongs with the stadium, not only with the garden. It was made for exhibitions, ceremonies, and the revived Olympic movement, so the colonnades and formal halls are modern Greece presenting itself through classical architecture.
