Lima and Callao Metro: Line 1 is the city-scale railway, running 33 kilometers from Villa El Salvador through central districts to San Juan de Lurigancho. Line 2 is currently a short, separate subway between Evitamiento and Mercado Santa Anita. The rest of Line 2 and its Callao airport branch are still construction projects.
A first Line 1 section was completed in 1990 but did not become a dependable full public railway. Regular service on the rebuilt southern section began in 2011, and the extension to Bayóvar opened in 2014. Line 2 Stage 1A opened in 2023 as Peru’s first underground metro.
Riding the network
Line 1 uses its own rechargeable card. Line 2 requires the ATU Tarjeta Interoperable de Transporte at both entry and exit. At the August 2026 check, validation on Line 2 was mandatory but the five-station ride was still free. The two cards are not yet a single universal fare product.
Current vehicles and ride: Line 1 uses six-car electric trains, including the original Italian fleet and later Alstom Metropolis sets. Line 2 uses six-car, fully automated Hitachi Rail trains behind platform screen doors.
There is no operating rail interchange between Lines 1 and 2 yet. Line 1 connects with buses and the Metropolitano at street level, while the open part of Line 2 remains east of the center. Future transfer stations on published maps do not count as current connections.
Accessibility: Both lines have step-free routes, lifts, tactile paving, and level or near-level boarding. Lift outages matter because many Line 1 platforms are elevated. Check the operator notice when a lift is essential.
Line 1 gets extremely crowded at commuter hours. Keep phones and wallets controlled in queues and crowded cars. Line 2 construction updates often describe the future 27-station line, while only five stations are open.
