Mike’s notes

The train is the straightforward way to travel between Schiphol Airport, Leiden, and The Hague. The station sits below the airport terminal, and direct trains run to both Den Haag Centraal and Den Haag HS.

The destination matters. Den Haag Centraal is a terminus on the north side of the center. Den Haag HS is a through station southeast of the center. They are separate stations, and a hotel near one is not necessarily convenient to the other.

Intercity or Sprinter

Take an Intercity for the fast airport trip. The shortest pattern stops at Leiden Centraal before Den Haag Centraal. Other Intercity trains continue through Den Haag Laan van NOI to Den Haag HS.

The Sprinter to Den Haag Centraal makes the local stops at Hoofddorp, Nieuw Vennep, Sassenheim, De Vink, Voorschoten, Mariahoeve, and Laan van NOI. It is useful for those stations, but slower for a trip between the airport and central The Hague.

Check the live planner because platform assignments and individual stopping patterns change. The Intercity Direct supplement applies on the high-speed section between Schiphol and Rotterdam, not to a normal Schiphol to The Hague journey.

Pay at the gate

Use the same contactless card or device to check in and out. An OV-chipkaart, mobile ticket, or paper ticket also works. Keep the payment method available for inspection and do not switch between a physical card and its phone-wallet version during one journey.

Modern Sprinter and ICNG trains have sliding steps, accessible toilets, and designated wheelchair spaces. Train and platform layouts still vary, so arrange NS Travel Assistance at least one hour ahead when boarding help is required.
