Pendeltåg is Stockholm's regional railway. Four current line numbers share the central tunnel through Stockholm Odenplan, Stockholm City, and Stockholms södra, then split toward the outer branches.
The network is more useful than the city name suggests. It reaches Arlanda Airport and Uppsala to the north, Bålsta to the northwest, and Nynäshamn, Gnesta, and Södertälje to the south. Stockholm City connects directly with the metro at T-Centralen.
Airport rules are different
Line 40 stops at Arlanda Central, below SkyCity. A normal SL ticket is not enough by itself because the station has an airport passage fee. The combined fare can be bought through SL. Arlanda Express uses a separate station and ticket.
Tickets and bicycles
Touch a contactless card at the reader or activate an app ticket before entering. SL single tickets last 75 minutes. There is no touch out on normal SL travel.
Bicycles are allowed on commuter trains outside restricted times, but boarding or leaving with a bicycle is prohibited at Stockholm City and Arlanda Central. Peak-hour restrictions apply in the busiest direction, so check SL's current bicycle rules before arriving at the platform.
Pendeltåg service began under the regional system in 1968. The Citybanan tunnel opened in 2017 and moved commuter trains into dedicated central tracks, adding Stockholm City and Odenplan. Current trains are air-conditioned, have level or near-level access at most platforms, and carry a portable ramp for wheelchair boarding.
