Line 40 runs from Uppsala C to Södertälje centrum, linking Arlanda Airport, northern suburbs, central Stockholm, and the southwestern branch in one service pattern.

The line uses the Citybanan tunnel, which opened in 2017 to give commuter trains dedicated tracks beneath central Stockholm. Stockholm Odenplan and Stockholm City opened with that project.

An SL ticket covers the route, but entering or leaving at Arlanda Central adds the airport passage fee. Touch in with the SL app, an SL card, or a contactless bank card. There is no normal touch out.

Air-conditioned X60 trains have open interiors, wheelchair spaces, and portable boarding ramps. Airport and central trains can be crowded. Bicycles cannot be taken on or off at Arlanda Central or Stockholm City, and additional peak restrictions apply.
