Sarajevo to Mostar is the ŽFBH route most travelers are likely to take. The railway follows the Neretva through tunnels, river bends, and steep valley walls. The trains are modern Talgo sets with air conditioning.
Routes and frequency
Sarajevo to Mostar and Čapljina has two daily pairs in the 2025/26 timetable. The scheduled run to Mostar is about two hours. Čapljina is the year-round southern terminus.
Sarajevo to Ploče is a seasonal international extension into Croatia. From June 26 to September 27, 2026, it runs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The train leaves Sarajevo at 07:15 and Ploče at 18:26.
Sarajevo to Maglaj has one afternoon departure from Sarajevo and an early-morning return. Local trains also cover shorter sections to Pazarić, Visoko, and Zenica. The timetable does not join this service to the ŽRS trains at Doboj.
How do tickets work?
Domestic fares are low by European standards, and the operator publishes current times and ticket information online. Sarajevo to Mostar is listed at 14.10 BAM in second class by the Man in Seat 61, with Sarajevo to Čapljina at 17 BAM. Check ŽFBH before travel because fares and collection rules can change.
Ploče uses a separate procedure. Buy the ticket by noon on the day before travel at Sarajevo, Hadžići, Konjic, Mostar, or Čapljina. The sales desk records the passenger's name, birth year, and passport number for border formalities. The 2026 fare is 29.30 BAM one way or 48.30 BAM return.
Where passenger service ends
There is no current passenger train from Sarajevo to Belgrade or Zagreb. Dubrovnik, Split, Trebinje, Travnik, and Jajce also lack passenger rail service. Buses handle those trips.
The physical railway continues beyond the passenger timetable in several directions. That distinction explains many misleading maps. A line on a railway map does not mean a passenger train runs over it.
