Mike’s notes
Montenegro's passenger railway has two physical corridors. The main line runs from Bar through Podgorica, Kolašin, Mojkovac, and Bijelo Polje toward Serbia. A branch runs west from Podgorica through Danilovgrad to Nikšić.
Routes and frequency
Bar to Podgorica has the strongest local timetable. The current summer schedule lists eleven departures in each direction, including trains that continue north or cross into Serbia. The scheduled trip is about one hour, and the regular second-class fare is €2.80.
I rode morning train 6150 from Bar Railway Station to Podgorica Railway Station on July 12, 2025. The paper ticket showed a 06:24 departure and 07:23 arrival. Two second-class fares cost €5.60 total. The older carriage had high-backed seats with wooden armrests.
Podgorica to Kolašin and Bijelo Polje covers the mountain section of the Bar railway. Five trains run in each direction in the current timetable. Podgorica to Kolašin costs €3.40 in second class, while Podgorica to Bijelo Polje costs €5.20.
Podgorica to Nikšić has five daily pairs. The trip takes about one hour and six minutes, and the regular second-class fare is €3.20.
Can the train serve Podgorica Airport?
Local trains between Bar and Podgorica call at Aerodrom. The scheduled rail trip between Aerodrom and central Podgorica takes seven minutes.
Aerodrom is outside the airport terminal rather than inside an integrated station. Check the route between the terminal and platform, allow time for the walk, and confirm that a train matches the flight. A taxi remains simpler when the timetable leaves a long wait or luggage makes the station approach awkward.
What runs to Serbia?
The year-round night train links Bar, Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, Belgrade Centre, and Zemun. Train 432 leaves Bar at 20:10 and reaches Belgrade Centre at 07:08. The return train 433 leaves Belgrade Centre at 19:54 and reaches Bar at 06:54. The consist includes seats, couchettes, sleeping cars, and space for accompanied vehicles.
The seasonal daytime service runs during the summer timetable. In 2026, train 1130 leaves Bar from June 13 through September 14. Train 1131 runs toward Bar from June 12 through September 13. Passengers change between the Serbian and Montenegrin trains at Bijelo Polje.
How do tickets work?
ŽPCG began online domestic and international ticket sales on July 21, 2026. Tickets and reservations can be shown in the web application or printed from the PDF sent by email.
Regular second-class fares include €2.80 from Bar to Podgorica, €3.20 from Podgorica to Nikšić, and €7.20 from Bar to Bijelo Polje. Bar to Belgrade Centre is listed at €23.80 before the mandatory international seat reservation. Couchette and sleeping-car supplements cost extra.
Where passenger trains do not go
Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Herceg Novi, Cetinje, Ulcinj, and Žabljak have no passenger railway. Buses handle those trips.
The railway from Podgorica toward the Albanian border carries freight, but it has no scheduled passenger service. There is no passenger train from Montenegro to Shkodër.
